GramaChanda at Seawoods: Kalaripayattu, Kerala Food and a Nostalgic Village Market

by admin

On June 6 at 4:30 pm, Ganesh Maidan (Sector 48, Seawoods) will come alive with GramaChanda — a vintage Kerala village fair presented by the Seawoods Malayali Samajam as part of its 25th‑anniversary celebrations.

Highlight performance: Kalaripayattu

The evening’s centrepiece is a dramatic Kalaripayattu (traditional Kerala martial arts) performance inspired by the legendary duel of Thacholi Othenan and his guru, Kathiroor. The sequence — evoking the historic Ezharakandam known as Ponnyathangam — will be staged as four rounds of intense, theatrical combat, running through the market and finishing around 9:30 pm.

A living village market

The GramaChanda recreates the sights and sounds of Kerala’s old village markets: tea and stew stalls that recall the 1970s–80s, kanji and kappa stalls, fresh fish counters, traditional snacks, local cosmetics and more.

Visitors can also explore stalls for handicrafts, a bathing stall, swings, a small library, and folk tableaux.

A Panchagusti and a nostalgic eighties‑style lottery add extra colour, while an old‑songs singing competition provides musical nostalgia.

Food and community

Numerous local food vendors will offer authentic Kerala fare. Entry to Village Market 2026 is free, and the event is expected to attract both Malayalis and non‑Keralites from across the city.

Sustainability and community values

As a model community organisation, Seawoods Malayali Samajam aims to make the market plastic‑free and reduce its carbon footprint.

Organisers will distribute quality cloth bags to discourage single‑use plastic and promote the message “Local is the Future” to younger generations.
