Spurs boss concedes the squad lacks sufficient quality, experience and leadership
Tottenham Hotspur chief executive Vinai Venkatesham has acknowledged that the current squad requires added quality, experience and leadership to compete at the top level consistently.
In his notes for the matchday programme ahead of Spurs’ key Premier League clash against West Ham on Saturday, Venkatesham said the club has confidence in its players but recognises the need to strengthen. He stressed that achieving this will involve a more proactive recruitment strategy and a wage structure aligned with the club’s long-term ambitions.
Venkatesham confirmed that Tottenham are keen to reinforce the squad during the January transfer window if suitable opportunities arise, while noting that the biggest transfer activity usually takes place in the summer. He emphasised that any new signings must clearly improve the team and that the club will remain disciplined in its approach.
He also highlighted that player trading includes making timely decisions on departures, particularly for players not part of the club’s future plans. This, he said, is crucial for maximising value and complying with financial fair play regulations, which Spurs must manage carefully.
Venkatesham added that this strategy is reflected in the appointment of Rafi Moursen from the City Football Group as Director of Football Operations. Set to join later this year, Moursen will report to Sporting Director Johan Lange and play a key role in overseeing player transfers and supporting the club’s wider football operations.
