Food safety authorities in Jaipur have seized around 100 litres of mayonnaise after laboratory tests confirmed the presence of titanium dioxide, a chemical considered unsafe for consumption in food products.
The action was taken during a routine inspection drive carried out by the food safety department at local manufacturing and storage units. Samples collected from the premises were sent for testing, which later revealed the use of the banned substance.
Officials said titanium dioxide is often added to food items to enhance colour and texture, but its use in edible products has raised serious health concerns. Several international health agencies have flagged potential risks linked to long-term consumption of the chemical.
Following the confirmation, authorities immediately confiscated the entire stock of the mayonnaise and initiated legal proceedings against the concerned manufacturer under food safety laws.
The food department has also warned other food producers and vendors to strictly comply with safety regulations. Further inspections are expected across the city to ensure that no other contaminated food products are being sold in the market.
